Renald was until his retirement both a practicing accountant and lawyer. Renald joined the accountancy profession in 1979. During 1987 he joined forces with another accountant to form his own auditing practice. In 1990 he merged this practice with another audit firm to form Grant Thornton Malta. At Grant Thornton he occupied the post of staff partner and senior tax partner. After leaving Grant Thornton in 1995 he formed his own firm which he merged with that of David Busuttil in 2002, and thus formed Busuttil & Micallef. At Busuttil & Micallef Renald headed the tax division of the group and was responsible for Compliance until his retirement in December 2017. In 2003 Renald graduated as a lawyer from the University of Malta and in the following year became the first Maltese to hold dual warrants to practise both as an accountant and as a lawyer. As a matter of fact in 2005 he set-up the law firm Renald Micallef and Associates.
Renald is a fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, of the Malta Institute of Accountants, and of the Malta Institute of Taxation. He is also a member of the Institute of Financial Service Practioners, of the Chamber of Advocates and is also a founder member of the Malta Institute of Taxation and held various official post within this institute including general secretary, vice prrsicent and also president. On the international scene Renald represented the Malta Institute of Taxation when he was appionted a member of the General Assembly of the Confédération Fiscale Européenne and also was a founder member of and represented Busuttil & Micallef on the European Tax Committee of Impact International. For a couple of years he also acted as an examiner in an accountancy credit within the faculty of Law and also acted as a reviewer for a number of LLD thesis. Currently he acts as a court expert doing forensic work both in the civil and criminal Courts is a director at Areti and Partners Ltd and is also its MLRO.
Renald’s out of office interest include reading, chess, painting, motor biking and boating.
